Language Arts Favourites

Kids A-Z is a great site. In the Reading part of the site, students in Grade 4K can listen to books, read them to the teacher (record them on-line for me to listen to later), and take quizzes to show their understanding. There's a wide variety of text types, both fiction and non-fiction, all at "just right" reading levels. In the Writing area, students can write about anything they like. There are a number of guided writing projects, using graphic organisers similar to those we use in class, or students can create their own book, or simply write in whatever style they choose.

Studyladder is a free site where students can explore a variety of reading, writing, spelling and grammar activities. They are limited to three non-assigned activities a day unless parents sign up for increased access.

Building vocabulary is essential for learning. Using a paper dictionary can be really time consuming for children, especially when the meanings include words they don't know. One on-line dictionary that I've found very useful is Kids.wordsmyth. It has different levels for different age students, and it has some great tools for teachers, like the glossary builder and quiz makers.
